When insight is not enough
You can understand what happened and still feel stuck.
Insight and talking can be valuable. Some people understand their past extremely well and know intellectually why they react the way they do.
And yet, their nervous system may still react as though the past is happening now: anxiety, shame, intrusive memories, emotional triggers, avoidance, relationship difficulties, or simply the sense that something remains unresolved.
EMDR and other trauma-focused approaches can complement that understanding by working with experiences that still feel emotionally or physically activated.

Trauma doesn't always look like trauma.
A difficult experience may be relevant to trauma-focused therapy without needing to fit a label. You may recognize yourself in one or more of these:
Working with mind and body
EMDR and Somatic Therapy
Trauma processing can bring up physical responses such as tightness, pressure, heaviness, numbness, an urge to escape, or disconnection. I may integrate somatic awareness by helping you notice and track these responses during EMDR.
For clients who intellectualize, disconnect, or become easily overwhelmed, we can slow the process, work with physical sensations and regulate activation, and then return to EMDR processing when it feels manageable.

What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a trauma-focused therapy designed to help the brain process distressing experiences that continue to feel unresolved.
While carefully working with memories, emotions, beliefs, or physical sensations, bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements or other alternating stimulation—may be used.
The goal is not to erase memories. It is to help an experience increasingly feel like something that happened in the past, rather than something your mind and body must keep reacting to now.
Every treatment plan is individualized. Preparation, stabilization, grounding, and emotional regulation can be part of the work before deeper processing.

EMDR is one tool. Your therapy should fit you.
EMDR and trauma treatment remain central here, without forcing anyone into a rigid protocol. Depending on your situation, therapy can move between processing the past and building ways to respond differently in everyday life.

EMDR therapy FAQ
Does EMDR require me to talk about everything that happened?
Not necessarily. You do not have to describe every detail of a difficult experience aloud. The approach is collaborative, and we can discuss what feels useful and manageable.
Is EMDR only for PTSD?
EMDR is strongly associated with trauma and PTSD treatment. Depending on the person and clinical context, it may also be considered for other distressing experiences or symptoms.
What if talking about trauma feels overwhelming?
Trauma work does not need to begin with the most disturbing experience. Preparation can include grounding, stabilization, emotional regulation, and building your ability to stay present.
Do you offer in-person EMDR therapy?
Yes. In-person trauma-focused therapy is available at Shaya's Boca Raton office.
Do you offer online EMDR?
Virtual sessions are available to appropriate clients located in Florida and New Jersey, where Shaya is licensed.
How long are EMDR sessions?
Session length can vary with clinical needs and availability. This may include standard sessions and, when appropriate, longer EMDR sessions. A consultation is a good place to ask what may fit your situation.
How do I know whether EMDR is right for me?
You do not have to decide that before reaching out. A free 15-minute consultation is a place to briefly discuss what you are looking for and ask questions.
