More than being nervous

The fear may be specific. Its impact can spread.

When avoidance starts making decisions for you

A phobia can affect which trips you take, where you drive, whether you seek medical care, and how much independence you feel you have. Treatment focuses on helping you respond with more flexibility rather than organizing life around the fear.

Avoidance usually brings short-term relief, which teaches the brain to keep sounding the alarm. Over time, you may take longer routes, decline travel, delay healthcare, rely on someone else to accompany you, or spend days anticipating an event that others consider routine.

Common ways phobias show up

Fear can make your world smaller.

Flying, heights, bridges, or elevators
Driving, highways, or being far from home
Needles, blood, medical procedures, or dental care
Vomiting, illness, or losing physical control
Dogs, insects, snakes, or other animals
Enclosed spaces, crowds, or situations that feel hard to leave

This is not a complete list. We can discuss your particular fear and whether my approach is appropriate during a consultation.

Why insight alone may not resolve it

Your alarm system can react before logic catches up.

Phobias are learned fear responses. A direct frightening experience can contribute, but sometimes the origin is less obvious. Images, sensations, stories, panic symptoms, or repeated avoidance can all become linked with danger.

You may tell yourself, “I know I am safe,” while experiencing a racing heart, nausea, dizziness, muscle tension, an urge to escape, or a sense of being trapped. This does not mean you are weak or unwilling. It means the fear response needs a different kind of therapeutic attention than reassurance alone can provide.

My approach to phobia treatment

EMDR is the primary treatment approach.

EMDR

EMDR uses focused attention and bilateral stimulation to help the brain process experiences and associations that continue to trigger an intense alarm response. We may target a frightening memory, the worst imagined outcome, or the physical sensations linked with the fear.

Flash Technique

The Flash Technique is a gentle EMDR-related intervention that may reduce the disturbance connected to a memory without requiring you to focus on it continuously or describe every detail. It can be useful when a target feels too activating to approach directly at first.

Supportive exposure

When appropriate, gradual exposure can help your nervous system learn from new experiences. We plan it collaboratively and use it to support the EMDR work—not as the sole or automatic starting point.

What treatment may look like

A clear process, adapted to your situation

1

Understand the fear and what keeps it going

We begin with your history, current triggers, physical responses, avoidance patterns, and the situations you want to handle differently. Treatment is shaped around your specific fear rather than a one-size-fits-all plan.

2

Build enough steadiness to approach the work

Before directly processing a feared experience, we may practice grounding, pacing, and ways to stay connected to the present. The goal is not to force you into distress before you are ready.

3

Target the fear response with EMDR

EMDR can help process memories, images, sensations, and anticipated catastrophes connected to the phobia. This may include a past frightening event, something you witnessed, or the feared future scenario your mind repeatedly rehearses.

4

Practice returning to avoided parts of life

When useful, we may plan gradual, collaborative practice with feared situations. Exposure is used as a supportive tool—not as an abrupt test—and is paced around your goals, safety, and readiness.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about phobia therapy

Do I have to face my biggest fear right away?

No. We first assess the fear, understand your responses, and develop a treatment plan. Any direct practice with a feared situation is gradual, collaborative, and discussed ahead of time.

What if I know the fear is irrational but still cannot stop it?

That is common with phobias. Logical understanding and the nervous system's alarm response do not always change together. Treatment works with the learned fear response rather than asking you to simply reason your way out of it.

Can phobia treatment be done virtually?

Often, yes. EMDR, preparation, and carefully planned real-life practice can be adapted to telehealth when clinically appropriate. Virtual therapy is available to clients located in Florida and New Jersey.

How long does phobia treatment take?

There is no fixed timeline. It depends on the phobia, how long it has been present, whether trauma or panic is involved, the degree of avoidance, and your broader treatment needs. We will review progress and adjust the plan together.
