The therapeutic relationship
For difficulties that began in relationships, a steady and predictable one does a substantial part of the work.
When it started a long time ago
Some people can point to one event. Others describe years in which certain things were normal.
The effects show up now: shame that feels like a fact, difficulty trusting people, staying alert when nothing is wrong, or going blank when feelings rise.
Understanding your history often changes very little on its own. EMDR and somatic work can reach material that talking has not.
Available in person in Boca Raton and virtually for appropriate clients in Florida and New Jersey.

Paced work, built on a steady relationship.
What complex trauma means
The term describes the effects of painful experience that continued over time, often beginning early, often involving people who were meant to be safe. C-PTSD is the shorthand many people use.
A single overwhelming event tends to leave a specific mark. Years of a particular environment tend to shape how you read people, what you expect, and what you believe about yourself.

These are experiences to look at together rather than a checklist to diagnose yourself with.
How this differs from the EMDR page
Here I describe what complex trauma looks like day to day and what treating it requires — pacing, stability, and a steady relationship before processing begins.
The EMDR page explains how the method itself works, what a session involves, and what it can treat.

For difficulties that began in relationships, a steady and predictable one does a substantial part of the work.
Grounding, pacing, and staying connected to the present, so that approaching difficult material stays manageable.
I am an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist. EMDR is effective for complex trauma, usually in a more paced way than for a single incident, and usually after enough stability is in place.
Useful for the parts that were never put into words.
I will not attempt to recover hidden memories, and we will not process everything at once.
What treatment may look like
Your history, the patterns you notice today, and what you want to be different.
Grounding, regulation, and a reliable working relationship, before any processing begins.
EMDR and somatic work, targeted at specific material, at a pace we set together.
Applying what shifts to trust, closeness, and how you read other people.
No. C-PTSD is a useful shorthand rather than a requirement. We work from what you are experiencing.
That is a common reason people come. Insight and relief are different things. EMDR and somatic work address material that understanding has not reached.
We build steadiness before we process, and we slow down when we need to. Going blank is information about pacing, and we adjust.
No. You set what gets said and when. Treatment can begin with stabilization while I understand only the outline.
