When getting through the day takes everything

Depression Therapy in Boca Raton

Depression can look like sadness. It can also look like numbness, or like managing everything competently and feeling nothing while you do it.

You can start therapy without being able to explain why you feel this way.

Available in person in Boca Raton and virtually for appropriate clients in Florida and New Jersey.

You can start without having an explanation.

Functioning and still struggling

Depression that nobody can see is still depression.

The gap becomes its own weight

Many of the people I work with are doing well by any outside measure. They work, raise children, and meet their obligations. The gap between how it looks and how it feels becomes its own weight.

You do not have to fall apart in public for it to count.

What people bring to these sessions

How depression usually shows up.

Heaviness that rest does not touch
Numbness rather than sadness
Harsh self-criticism you would never direct at anyone else
Things that used to matter no longer registering
Withdrawing from people, then feeling the isolation
Functioning in public and struggling privately
Mornings being the hardest part of the day

Several of these can be true at once, and the mix changes over time.

Why it can be hard to start

Depression makes its own case for staying where you are.

It argues that you are uninteresting, that you would be a burden, and that nothing would help anyway. Those thoughts arrive as conclusions rather than as questions.

A weekly relationship that contradicts them does real work, which is part of why connection matters as much as technique here.

My approach

Understanding what is driving it, and steps small enough to take.

Understanding first

What is happening, how long it has been going on, and what surrounds it.

Connection

Depression argues that you are uninteresting and a burden. A relationship that contradicts that weekly does real work.

EMDR where it fits

Where particular experiences or fixed beliefs about yourself are driving it, EMDR can reduce their hold. It is one tool among several rather than a treatment for every form of depression.

Somatic awareness

Useful with numbness. Noticing what is present, without having to produce a feeling on command.

Practical steps are usually part of this — some routine, one thing that used to matter, seeing one person. Deliberately small. Getting more done is not how we will know this is working.

I do not prescribe or manage medication. Therapy works alongside whatever care you have.

If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please contact a crisis line — 988 in the US — or emergency services.

What treatment may look like

A clear process, adapted to your situation

1

Understand what is happening

How long it has been going on, what surrounds it, and what has already been tried.

2

Rebuild some routine and contact

Small, specific steps, chosen by you rather than assigned to you.

3

Address what is driving it

EMDR where particular experiences or fixed beliefs about yourself are holding it in place.

4

Work with numbness directly

Somatic awareness, so that feeling returns without being forced.

Questions about depression therapy

Can I come if I do not know why I feel this way?

Yes. Many people start there. Working out what is happening is part of the treatment rather than a prerequisite for it.

What if I feel numb rather than sad?

Numbness is a common form of depression. Somatic work is often useful for it, and nothing requires you to produce a feeling on command.

Will therapy involve practical steps?

Usually, and deliberately small ones. Some routine, one thing that used to matter, seeing one person.

Can therapy be part of a broader treatment plan?

Yes. I do not prescribe or manage medication, and therapy works alongside whatever other care you have.
