The part that is hard to say out loud

Pornography & Compulsive Sexual Behavior Therapy in Boca Raton

This is one of the harder things to raise in a first session. It is also one of the more common reasons people come in.

You can say it plainly here.

Available in person in Boca Raton and virtually for appropriate clients in Florida and New Jersey.

How I think about it

The label matters less than what is actually happening.

Which one applies to you shapes the treatment

Sometimes the behavior works compulsively. Sometimes the distress comes from a conflict between what you do and what you believe. Sometimes both are true.

We work that out together rather than starting from a diagnosis.

What people bring to these sessions

The shape it usually takes.

Deciding it was the last time, repeatedly
Hours and secrecy adding up beyond what you intended
Feeling distant from a partner, or from yourself
Escalation that concerns you
A gap between how you are living and what you value
Shame that makes the subject almost impossible to raise

Nothing has to be said in the first session. You can begin with a rough outline and fill it in as you go.

Where we start from

Your values are the starting point.

If your religious tradition is part of how you understand this, it belongs in the room. Sexual orientation and identity are outside the scope of this page.

This is individual therapy. I work with relationship concerns individually and do not offer couples therapy.

My approach

Understanding the cycle, then changing it.

Mapping the pattern

When it happens, what comes immediately before, and what it handles.

Honest conversation

Being able to describe it accurately to another person is often the first time that has happened, and it changes what is possible.

Practical change

Structure around the predictable moments rather than relying on resolve.

What sits underneath

Loneliness, anxiety, boredom, shame, or earlier experiences that shaped how you relate to sex and closeness. EMDR may help where specific memories stay charged.

What treatment may look like

A clear process, adapted to your situation

1

Map the pattern

When it happens, what comes immediately before, and what it handles.

2

Say the accurate version out loud

Describing it precisely to another person changes what is possible.

3

Build practical structure

Planning around the predictable moments rather than relying on resolve.

4

Work on what sits underneath

Loneliness, anxiety, shame, or earlier experiences, with EMDR where specific memories stay charged.

Men's issues

You can come for these on their own.

Many men work with me on the following without any pornography or sexual behavior concern:

Difficulty naming or expressing emotion
Shame and self-worth, often behind visible competence
Loneliness, including among men with full lives
Emotional closeness in relationships
Anger that arrives faster than intended
Direction, motivation, and what you are building

Men are often told to open up without being told what that means in practice. Part of my work is making it concrete.

Questions about this work

What if I feel too embarrassed to explain?

That is the usual starting point. You can begin with a rough outline and fill it in as you go. Nothing has to be said in the first session.

Do I need to use the word addiction?

No. The label matters less than what is actually happening, and which framing applies to you is something we work out together.

Can therapy respect my religious or personal values?

Yes. Your values are the starting point. If your religious tradition is part of how you understand this, it belongs in the room.

Can I come for men's issues without pornography concerns?

Yes. Many men work with me on emotion, shame, loneliness, anger, or direction with no pornography or sexual behavior concern at all.
